Stories Without Borders: India’s Comics Rise, Transforming Fandom into Global Dialogue

Stories Without Borders: India’s Comics Rise, Transforming Fandom into Global Dialogue

Comics are no longer the quiet corner of India’s AVGC story — they are becoming its pulse. And if one traces the past year, the Indian Comics Association (ICA) has been the thread stitching together moments that feel less like events and more like turning points.

The spark came in May 2025, when ICA partnered with the WAVES Investor Meet. For the first time, comics were spoken of in the language of investment and growth. It was a shift in perception — from hobby to industry, from culture to economy. That moment set the stage for what was to follow.

By December, the journey had gathered momentum. At Singapore Comic Con (6–7 Dec 2025), Indian comics stood proudly on a global stage. The ICA booth, in partnership with Curious Bit Store, showcased titles from Cinemics, Flydreams, Chitragaatha, Vrindkavi, Radiant Comics, Cosmics, and even Amar Chitra Katha. For international fans, it was a revelation: Indian comics were diverse, vibrant, and ready to converse with the world.

Soon after, at the CII Big Pictures Summit in Mumbai (1–2 Dec 2025), Indian Comics Association (ICA) members — Ajitesh Sharma, Anadi Abhilash, Md Shahbaz, and Pratik Bhattacharya — joined the WAVES Bazaar Investor Meet session. Executives from WAVEX and AVGC XR leaders engaged with ICA on the upliftment of Indian comics. For observers, this was a symbolic moment: comics were no longer just about fandom; they were part of the future of India’s creative economy.

The new year opened with bridges. OTA Tokyo in Bangalore (10 Jan 2026) was a landmark handshake between Japanese manga and Indian comics. Held at Bangalore Palace, it was the first time Japan’s flagship manga event came to India — and ICA was the official partner. ICA publishers like Cosmics Entertainment, Chitragaatha, Cinemics, Curious Bit, Flydreams, and Paper Sketch added creative depth. As ICA’s Event Head, Md Shahbaz said, “Indian manga meeting Japanese manga will play a significant role in bridging cross-border cultures.” For fans, it was proof that ink can cross borders more easily than trade.

Almost in the same breath, Inkmation Delhi (24–25 Jan 2026) unfolded. ICA’s presence was everywhere — panels, masterclasses, exhibitions. Veteran publisher Sanjay Gupta (Raj Comics) inspired youth with his journey, while Vasu Gupta (Alpha Comics), Arnav Anand (Vrindkavi), and Shambhu Nath Mahto (Besra Comics) spoke of the future. The Creative Panel — Lalit Sharma, Pradeep Sherawat, Jagdish Kumar, Harendra Singh Saini, and Ujjwal Bhargava — offered insights into comic-making processes, moderated seamlessly by Ayush Kumar. Fans thronged the exhibitor arena, where Chitragaatha Comics, Comics Today Magazine, and Besra Comics drew overwhelming response. For Delhi, it was a festival of careers and creativity, reminding everyone that comics are futures waiting to be built.

February carried the rhythm forward. At Anime India Kolkata (14–15 Feb 2026), Indian Comics Association (ICA) partnered with India’s biggest anime manga event. The Comics Street Arena buzzed with ICA exhibitors — Cosmics Entertainment, Chitragaatha, Cinemics, Holy Cow Entertainment, and Flydreams Comics. The highlight was the AVGC XR 40 Under 40 Awards, where ICA members Anadi Abhilash (Chitragaatha) and Vasu Gupta (Alpha Comics) were honored for their sustained contributions. For the industry, it was recognition that Indian comics are not only surviving but thriving, with leaders shaping its destiny.

And then came the crescendo: GAFX Bengaluru (27 Feb–1 Mar 2026). Among ICA’s panels and expos, one initiative stood out — the Indo‑Colombian Fan Art Contest, co‑hosted with Asocómics, the Colombian Comics Association.

“Electing winners was no easy task — every submission brimmed with thoughtfulness and respect for characters on both sides. The winning pieces stood out not for technical perfection alone, but for the way they seamlessly complemented and intrigued, merging traditions into a single visual dialogue,” quoted Ajitesh Sharma, the President of the Indian Comics Association

“For years, Colombia has nurtured this contest, consistently producing illustrations of breathtaking quality. This year, the collaboration with Indian artists elevated it further. We are deeply grateful: Indian creators treated our characters with respect, while introducing equally extraordinary heroes from India’s comic tradition,” quoted Santiago Suescún Garay, President, Asocómics

What made it unique was its parallel tracks: artists in Colombia and India creating simultaneously, yet in harmony. Both nations, rich in heritage and biodiversity, brought those qualities to life in their entries. The contest became a canvas where vivid palettes, diverse styles, and shared energy converged.

The result was more than an art competition — it was a cultural exchange, a shared stage where the “ninth art” of Colombia met the vibrant storytelling of India. Every participant contributed to this achievement, proving that comics are not just entertainment but a living bridge between cultures.

From investor meets to global conventions, from manga collaborations to fan art contests across continents, the journey of Indian comics in the past year has been nothing short of transformative. What began as a spark has become a movement — comics shifting from hobby to industry, from fandom to economy, from local stories to global dialogues.

The essence of this journey is simple yet profound: comics are not just panels on a page, they are bridges — between cultures, between generations, between imagination and industry. And as Indian comics continue to step onto world stages, they remind us that stories, when inked with passion and shared with respect, can travel farther than borders, and last longer than trends. Indian comics are no longer whispers in the margins; they are voices on the world stage. For more information you can visit Indian Comics Association
